What Is Personal Care for the Elderly?

Personal care includes assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, incontinence care, feeding, and transferring. These services ensure seniors receive the support they need to stay comfortable, safe, and healthy at home. Unlike companion care—which focuses on social engagement, light housekeeping, and companionship—personal care provides hands-on help with essential activities of daily living (ADLs).

How In-Home Personal Care Works

Personal caregivers typically visit the home on a schedule that suits your needs, whether it’s a few hours per week or full-time care. These caregivers assist with mobility, hygiene, medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and errands, allowing seniors to live with dignity and independence while easing the burden on family members.

Frequently Asked Questions About Personal Care at Home

Absolutely. We offer respite care services to give family caregivers temporary relief, allowing them to rest or attend to other responsibilities knowing their loved one is in capable hands.

The first step is to contact Serving Hands Senior Care. We’ll schedule a free 1-hour in-home consultation with our Client Care Coordinator to discuss your loved one’s needs and create a customized care plan that fits your family’s goals.

Our Registered Nurse (RN), who serves as the Client Care Coordinator, ensures the highest quality of care by overseeing all care services. They build strong relationships with clients and families and develop individualized care plans tailored to each client’s unique needs and preferences. This ensures your loved one receives compassionate, consistent, and professional support.

While we aim to respond promptly, starting care typically involves a few important steps to ensure quality and personalized support. After contacting us, we usually schedule a free in-home assessment within 24 to 48 hours. Following the assessment, our Client Care Coordinator develops a customized care plan based on your loved one’s specific needs. Once the care plan is finalized, we work with you to set up a schedule that fits your family’s preferences. Our goal is to provide timely, safe, and effective care that truly meets your loved one’s requirements.

Yes, caregivers can provide medication reminders and assistance to ensure your loved one is taking their medications safely and on time, but they do not administer medications like a nurse would. Our caregivers are trained to follow medication plans and observe for any concerns.

Personal care services can benefit seniors experiencing mobility challenges, cognitive decline due to conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s, or anyone recovering from surgery or illness. Personal care helps them remain safely and comfortably at home while maintaining their dignity and independence.

Personal care involves direct assistance with daily living tasks that may require physical help, such as bathing or toileting. Companion care, on the other hand, focuses on providing companionship, light housekeeping, and social interaction, but does not include hands-on personal care tasks.

At Serving Hands Senior Care, we aim to provide consistency by matching your loved one with the same caregiver as often as possible. Building a trusted relationship and ensuring comfort is our priority.
